2008-05-08 -  Recession (?) Consulting

Consulting is difficult enough in a good economy but what do we do when the business dries up because of cash flow ?  As consultants, we are used to telling business what changes they need to make and now is no different.   Rather than the longer projects that you might be used to, try going back to the companies that you know and who know you. They are probably not hiring at this time to save money but they swamping remaining employees or letting things go undone.
What can you do ? Offer your services in small chunks. Accept work that may be more along contract than consulting lines. Perhaps work for them every Friday. They can put stuff issues aside for you all week and when you come in for your one day, you can work on those issues.  When they get more money, they will appreciate that you helped them out.

Find just 5 companies that can use you one day per week. You get a full schedule. You are more on the "inside" than usual and can dia... more

2008-05-07 -  Networking for more than fun

Does anyone really get work from LinkedIn or Facebook ?  I know that the ratio of conversations to real business contacts hasn't happened for me.  There are some new sites out there that help people connect that really want the results. What are they ?

What do you for blogging ?   What blogs do you read ?  Where do you find your best leads ?

There is a great site, www.small-business-guru.com where Andrew wrote a great blog about all the money he spent on Google adwords and his learning experience there....great read and nice newsletter....

Do you have other things you recommend ? email me at Jill@jillsconsultantlist.com and I will highlight them !

2008-03-04 -  Girl Scouts giving it all !!

I am the Brownie Girl Scout leader for 2nd and 3rd grade girls.  The girls from my Troop are selling cookies this year to benefit the Harmony at Home project  (http://www.harmony-at-home.org and Colin McDonald's Marine Unit in Iraq.

These 10 girls are donating 100% of their profits - 70 cents per box -to Harmony at Home.  They will raise over $1000 for Harmony at Home. Their money will put therapists in several of the schools the children most affected by violence in their homes and neighborhoods attend for 1 day a week for 4 months !

While they sell the cookies, they are collecting boxes for a project we call "Cookies for Colin." People buy the cookies, but then put them in a box we will ship to Colin and his Ma... more

2008-03-04 -  How to know if your kids (or you) washed your hands well enough

SquidSoap by Airborne® is designed to teach and train proper hand-washing technique to children. It's the only liquid-soap dispenser with a specially designed pump that stamps a child's hand with vegetable dye. It takes about 20 seconds of thorough hand washing to remove the ink mark, leaving the child with clean hands. So it literally takes the guesswork out of whether or not your kids have washed their hands thoroughly. It’s easy, fun and effective.

SquidSoap by Airborne is available with an orange, purple or green plastic squid on top. It’s available at many leading retail stores throughout the United States. If you can’t find it in your favorite store, we offer selected multipacks for purchase online.

2008-02-20 -  Viagra for women and Metamucil in one drink

Ok, that was a teaser headline... but, I wrote about this in an earlier blog and I have a great update. Acai is the newest rage in healthy, anti-oxident juice.  At first, it was hard to get but - very exciting - today I found it at safeway in the regular, refridgerated juice cooler. Well priced and a lot of variety.  What about the viagra part ?  Well, research showed that tribes in history used the Acai berry for men who these days would be downing the little blue pill.  This was handy to find out since, well, how do I put this discretely ?  After drinking the juice every morning for a few days.....well.... either the added health makes people more 'in the mood' or the berry does have a little magic....anyway, try it out. It now comes in several brands and all the ones I have tried are yummy...... more

2008-02-15 -  Domain names for the whole family

When I set up this site in August 2006 I bought my 1st domain name. It was easy. I also bought ones that had similar names. As time went on, I would think new names and buy them too. For gifts I bought people their names. When the kids were good I bought parenting and teen site names.  One I bought "I married a loser . com".... not about my husband, but about a friend's husband.

GoDaddy can park these and put appropriate links on them based on up to 4 keywords. You customize the headers and format. It is a great service both for me and for searchers.  Check them out:

2007-12-20 -  day 3 - no customers yet

Well, it is lonely in the store.... But, the ad in the paper comes out tonight so things should pick up.  There is a picture in the ad from the wedding. It has my mom, stepdad, all 3 kids, Jim and everyones full name. If people see the pic and read the name, hopefully they will come in.  This is such a small town that probably 20% of the residents know someone in the picture !

Also, last night was the kid's school holiday singing program and I wore a Spencer Alexis jacket and handed out cards..

problem - lost the cell phone again... We decided to put the store number on a cell phone so I could answer it even when we are closed. Downside - store is open and I cant find the phone.... will get a new one today if I still can't find it by noon....... more

2007-12-20 -  eons.com and the Consultant Corner group...

On Amy Zuckerman's recommendation, I just joined Eons.com. Did everyone see her CNN interview ? Anyway, I am helping people who want to become consultants but want to run their businesses Virtually to eliminate the requisite travel that consulting is known for. In this group I would love to explore the challenges and rewards of a Virtual consulting career.

My opinion is that as people finish 20+ years in an industry, they are well suited to consult to that industry. This gives them the self employment that they might be ready for while not throwing away years of industry specific information.

I used to have a 'Gold' level membership that allowed discussion but I am a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel and eliminating overlap. Eons.com has such a great group set up that I have taken down that level of membership on this site.

2007-12-18 -  New Store - day 2

Well, today it rained. In Carmel that means nobody goes out unless they have to. It only rains 20 or so days a year and this is our 'wet' season which means it rained twice this month.

The ad in the paper may or may not be color and/or big. This was my fault.  I changed my mind over the weekend and then emailed the sales person. When she went to call me, I didnt answer the store phone. Why ?

Well, since our hours are just 12-4 I decided to put the store phone on a cell. Only since Jim and I are rotating in and out of the store and havent gotten used to the phone scene yet, the phone is lost...ugh... so I missed the call from the newspaper.

Since it was raining our temporary signs fell off...

We havent had any customers yet...but my mom came in. She cheered us up.

2007-12-15 -  My New Store

I can't believe it but I am opening a women's clothing store on Monday in Carmel CA.  www.JillsofCarmel.com is the site and it is soooo cute.  It is easier than it would be for most people because my husband just closed his shop in August and he is doing all of the back office stuff.  My job will be to pick the clothes, do the marketing and be there when the store is open. It should be fun. It is small and comfortable in a beautiful courtyard. It is off the beaten path so we do not expect casual walk-ins. Most people coming to the store will be coming specifically to see us.

If you are in Carmel, check us out. If you are not, our inventory is available online at www.twosistersofparadise.com.  I will keep this blog updated on the challenges and rewards of this new venture !... more

2007-12-13 -  So Many Networks, So little Time

Too many choices - there are networks everywhere. In some ways I think it is great - like if they are clearly identified with specific goals - and in other ways it is really a pain in the neck - like if they are just to say hi and post social notes.

I signed up for LinkedIn, Facebook, classmates and others at first. Now I am also on MyGenius.com, Jumpup.com, and a dozen others.  The first challenge is to use every site to it's fullest potential without leaving any stone unturned. The second challenge, let's face it, is remembering all the passwords and user ids.  I hear there is a software program that remembers your passwords. Now, what is the point of passwords if you are going to store them all on one program.  Sorry, I digress.

Anyway, yesterday someone told me about a new networking site for fitness people by fitness people.  I like that.  I also like my site, of course, which is just for consultants. I like Match.com w... more

2007-12-01 -  The real life version of LinkedIn

I am opening a women's clothing store soon (based on the inventory at www.twosistersofparadise.com and I had the very real 3rd degree of separation experience that I always am amused by.

My friend Kathy told me she was giving up her space, so I got ahold of her landlord and leased the space. I asked Kathy for a mailing list of locals. She gave me Tina's name. In a conversation with Tina, we discovered that a personal trainer I used in the past is her best friend.

We had a home showing the other day with the woman who organized our wedding. At the showing, one of the 5 women told me her son lives above our new store (out of 10 apartments up there) and she lives nearby and can walk over.

2007-12-01 -  keeping track of suppliers

When I started this site I searched high and low for the right suppliers and then, just to make sure I didnt lose their name, and to help you out, I blog about them.  I havent done this in awhile but here goes:

www.pioneercolor.com - these guys printed up some very nice sticker labels for us. They were great about proofs, changing colors etc, and making sure it was perfect before they printed and we bought.  They were very patient with my changes and they showed their artistic ability when I called them to say "it's just not right.

www.vistaprint.com  - I have ordered twice lately. The thing I love on this site is the oversized postcards, the templates are good, the price is right and the quality when I got them is terrific.

2007-12-01 -  Finding problems by watching traffic

This morning I was checking my traffic monitoring software.  This can be motivating, frustrating, useful and a huge waste of time - well, I guess that could be a lot of website activities.

This morning I noticed someone who kept coming back to the same page. I checked the page and realized that there was an article there that had gotten cut off mid-stream.  This happens sometimes with .php programming where it picks up a code and changes a bunch of stuff you never intended to touch. Oh well. Double check your work.

Anyway, the article was Steve Friedl's incredibly helpful and very long analysis of what it takes to become a consultant.  I went in and divided his article into many entries so that you can get right to the part that you want more easily.

The point is, as your site, or your business gets bigger it is hard to keep an eye of every single thing to make sure it is all working correctly. How many CEOs have be... more

Sometimes these work well - getting free articles that are appropriate to this site and posting them for you, contacting good consultants and marketers who help me in large and small ways, joining the Thirty Day Challenge -

Sometimes, they don't work so well. Stumbleupon is a huge time waster but really funny. It hurts my productivity but has replaced Computer solitaire when I need a brain thawing activity.  Twitter - ok, I admit that I have not testing this much yet but it has a lot of bl... more

2007-11-09 -  Article: Developing reciprocal business relationships by Andrew Brown

Developing reciprocal business relationships
by
Andrew Brown,  www.small-business-guru.com

The world is a collection of communities and the business world is no different. But many times when we hear the term “community” and business mentioned together, it is reference to the area where the business is located more than the individuals and companies that keep the world running. Your “community” at its core, is your specific niche in your industry. Beyond this direct relationship, is that of your suppliers and customers.

Business to business sales offer you an opportunity to develop reciprocal relationships that can have far reaching benefits for your own company as well as your customers. Developing constructive partnerships with other businesses can help you manage your company more efficiently and provide ways to reduce your ... more

2007-11-02 -  Competition - embrace them

At the recent conference I attended, I was able to hear many great speakers. I will tell you about them over time but today I want to tell you about Gayle Davis, also known as the Spunky Old Broad.  No, seriously, that is one of her websites.  One of the many valuable things she said was to embrace your competition. That by each competitor reaching higher, all parties benefit.  As you know, we are a relatively new list but I believe and others have validated that there is a genuine need for our service "out there."   In future blogs, I will highlight great sites that you can use to meet one of our 3 core goals:  Become a consultant, grow your consulting career, or find the right consultant for you.  Keep checking back !!... more

2007-10-30 -  Random Thoughts

I just got married 3 weeks ago. One of the things that I love about my husband is that he never starts a sentence with "you need to...."  and he is a perfect example of unconditional love and total acceptance.  Why do I tell you this ?  Because this blog used to be called "Jill's random thoughts" until some web programmer who I used awhile back changed it and I didn't notice.  So, tomorrow my wonderful new husband will go into the site and correct it to be just the way I wanted it. I listened to Delilah on the radio tonight  and I heard a caller who said the most important thing to her was that her mother always accepted her as she was and loved her no matter how badly she screwed up.  That is what my husband does for me.  And, when the web programmer wanted this blog to have a more normal name, like Jills Blog rather than Jills Random Thoughts Blog, he took a little of ME out of it...after all, those who know me ... more

Chamber of Commerce, Trade organization, Volunteer organization or even just an academic lecture or round table lunch...just go. Meet some new people. Get a new perspective and you will find enormous energy to take back to your business.  Good luck !... more

Career Networking: Mind Your Manners

2007-09-16 -  Hot new things ----

Hi everyone. Well, I have a new "thing" I am into.  I am sharing this because I always seem to be one of those people who gets something, tells everyone and then everyone gets it. One of the things I love about this blog is that I get to spread the word so much more efficiently. Previously, my new "things" were Tivo, GoDaddy, and Tianello's Tencel fabric.

What is it now ?  Monavie.  Really great juice.  I got turned on to it from parents of a friend of mine and just got my 1st taste.  I ordered some and became a distributer right away.  Check it out.

2007-09-13 -  website development

In 2007, every business should have a website.  It doesnt need to be fancy. It doesnt need to be e-commerce or database programming. It just needs to be a presence.  The banner ads in the Yellow pages used to reach everyone that we could do business with. Some ads were big, some small. Some ads had graphics, some just text. But, if you wanted someone to find you, you better be in the yellow pages.

These days the yellow pages is the internet.  All company, large or small, who do business should have a website with at least basic information, client list, how the business works, how to contact them.  To do this, you can go to GoDaddy.com and buy a domain name.  Their site will even suggest names to you.  So, now you own www.yourbusiness.com.   By the way, buy the name for 10 years. 2007-08-19 -  Life Changes every September

Here it is at the end of August.  School starts back in two days. Yes, most of the world does New Year's Resolutions but not me. My resolutions start in September.  My birthday is in September.  I have had a child in public schools with the big kickoff either in August or September for the past 20 years.  Summer ends and the water toys go away giving way to the fall and winter soccer balls and mittens.  Yes, I find that September is the best time in my life for declaring my "new" way of doing things. Deciding to diet, getting the garage cleaned out, working out more.... standard stuff.

This year my life changes more than usual.  I am getting married in October to an unbelievable man.  All the various family members from a wide and diversified (and modern) family tree all get along well.  Yes, this is a time for new beginnings.

2007-07-09 -  Blue Chip Expert

Good morning.  I love this site. People who check it out or hear my pitch say "wow, what a great idea" but the reality is that this site is not for everyone.  In order to be good on this site, you have to be independent and self driven. You have to search for the expert you want and develop that relationship yourself. If you are the expert, you need to put yourself out there and be open and wait for people to contact you.  This is not for everyone.

If you would prefer a more anonymous method to hiring or becoming an expert, I recently became aware of another site:  www.bluechipexpert.com.  This site is more of the recuiter/headhunter model. They have experts who help both sides of the equation find the right balance. Check it out.  You need an invitation code to get on the site so use jr945 and you will get through the system.

I am on my 2nd child in braces. My 1st was in 1996 when my older son was 14. They put the braces on, left them on for 3 years and took them off.  Now, my daughter is 8. Now they do 2 phases, one at 8 or 9 and the next at 14 or so.  The total time on the teeth is less but the cost is the same. No problem, right ?

Wrong. My daughter was a handful on the braces from day one. She really wanted them but the care they took was more than she was willing and able to put in. Even with my supervision and intervention, it was always something. A loose wire, a piece that hurt, inflamed gums...on and on and on.

Finally, we got Phase I off and moved to Phase 2 - a head brace at night for a year. Nope, more issues. Then came the 24 hour retainer.  That is supposed to mean 24 hours a day not how long it lasts before the dog eats it. I guess someone forgot to tell that to the dog.

Incredible people come in all different styles. There are the charity people who give their time, energy, heart and soul (and money) to bring attention to worthwhile causes.  There are people who start fabulous businesses on a shoestring.  There are the people who are so incredibly smart that I just can't imagine how they figured out certain theories.  Then there are people like Jim Cramer.  To be honest, back in the early 80's, Jim Cramer drove me nuts. He was loud, opinionated, didnt care who he offended and was telling people final answers in the stock market which I knew to be incredibly unpredictable.

Now, 20 years later, I was his show Mad Money.  Perhaps it is that he has really found his niche or that all the phonies in this business have failed and gone into other areas. But, Jim Cramer is still there. He is still ... more

2007-06-17 -  Father's rights

Over the past 9 months I have put post-it notes all over my computer reminding me of various topics I would like to address.  Today the issue of father's rights is the sticker I am going to pull off.  Now, this may not be a popular topic and if you are touchy about either side, just move on to the next page because I am sure to offend someone - and probably someone I know.

The article that got me thinking was about a wonderful man who was fighting for custody of his kids. His wife was an ok wife but a distant and uninvolved mom.  Now, honestly there are lots of these couples running around.  Frankly, a good marriage and family will draw upon the strengths of both adults to find the balance that works for them.  But, when divorce comes into the picture the whole balance changes.

In the situation that I was reading about, the mom got the kids because unless the mom is really, really a bad parent, she gets the kids by default.  This ... more

2007-06-12 -  Nice people make it all worthwhile

When I started this list, I ran into so many people who were supportive "great idea" and wanted to join right up.  As time went on, I tried various ways of getting the list known.  Some work well and some don't.  But, for everything I try, there is an interesting experience.

Recently I decided to email all the women named Jill that would be appropriate consultants for this list. I review each person's website to insure that I understand how they would benefit the customers of this list.

My most recent "Jill" is on the list. Her name is Jill Konrath and she is not only very successful, but, she is a really great person.  She made several suggestions to help the site improve and was a joy to deal with.  Please check out her profile and her website, www.sellingtobigcompanies.com.... more

2007-06-11 -  Article - 5 Things Salespeople Really Need from Marketing by Jill Konrath

by Jill Konrath, www.sellingtobigcompanies.com

New products and services are the lifeblood of organizations. The sales force eagerly awaits their arrival, hoping for a short-term competitive edge in a cut-throat market. Yet most new products fail to achieve the desired results in the vital first months after their introduction. When launching new products or services, here are five things Marketing can do to ensure the sales force is successful.

1. Provide a Strong Value Proposition
Weak value propositions are a leading cause of new product failures. Customers don't buy phrases such as increased productivity, more robust or reduced cost. Quantification of the value gained is essential in today's market. Be explicit. How much money is saved? What additional efficiencies are gained? What is the financial pay-off of getting a product to market two months sooner? S... more

2007-06-11 -  Article - Are You Asking Provocative Questions ? by Jill Konrath

By Jill Konrath www.sellingtobigcompanies.com.

The other night on TV, I saw an ESPN special on the Football Hall of Fame. Just before the final commercial break, the announcer said something like, "When we get back, you’ll have a chance to learn what we asked these Hall-of-Famers."

Then they showed clip after clip of the most famous football players ever, all shaking their heads saying things like, "Wow, that's a tough one" and "I don’t have a clue." Of course, I stayed glued to the television to find out the question that elicited these incredulous responses. When the show returned, the announcer posed the question:

"If you were the captain of a Hall of Fame football team, who would you pick to be on your team first?"

What a great question! Every single person had to really think before they answered it. Did they want ... more

2007-05-28 -  Addictions - work and coffee

Addictions - work, coffee... procrastinating   In 1991, the company I worked for (Schwab as many of you know) sent out a wellness flyer. It was to help people identify if they were, or knew, an alcoholic and how they could help. Well, I have never been much of a drinker. Oh yes, now and then I have gone overboard. And, yes, a nice glass of wine with friends is god too. But water and coffee are my drinks of choice 24 hours a day. Actually, on a side note, I recently started drinking Green Tea Lattes with Soy milk from Starbucks an... more

2007-05-28 -  Money Savvy Pig

http://www.msgen.com/
I am Susan Beacham and I have a dream. I am the mother of two girls. I was also a private banker, who repeatedly saw in my professional life how painful and difficult it was for my adult clients to deal with even the most basic concepts of personal finance. In 1999 I decided to do something about this and co-founded Money Savvy Generation with my husband, Michael.

My dream is to teach money management basics to elementary school aged children, a segment of our educational system virtually untouched because of the perceived complexity of the subject matter. Stated differently, I wanted to get "out in front" of money management behavior before bad habits set in. To start to make my dream come true I went into my local schools on a volunteer basis to teach my "Mrs. Money Talks Money" eight week curriculum. Armed with my Money Savvy Pig and motivating experiences with these s... more

2007-05-27 -  Lucinda Yates

Lucinda was always – and still is – known to be a uniquely creative person with strong sense of purpose and self direction. Growing up through the 60’s, Lucinda fed her creativity by teaching herself jewelry design and craft – a skill that would serve her, and her community, well later on in life.

Due to divorce and financial setback, Lucinda and her daughter became homeless. This was unacceptable. So with the help of friends and family and the strength of will, she found a home and began anew.

A new business.
1983 - 1989

With a roof over her head and a young child to support, Lucinda turned the cramped attic of her small apartment into a studio where she launched a line of fashion jewelry. It was 1983 and she was back on track. Over the next few years, demand for her work grew.... more

In Search of the Alzheimer’s Wanderer
by Mark L. Warner1

"In Spotsylvania, VA, a 67-year-old man wandered from his home on New Year's Eve.  In Oldham County, KY, a 77-year-old woman disappeared in sub-freezing temperatures in mid-January without a jacket or shoes.  And yesterday, an 87-year-old resident of Watertown, CT left her home barefoot in the blizzard.  All of them suffered from Alzheimer's disease."2

Every year there are an estimated 125,000 reports of critical wanderers – Alzheimer’s patients who leave the safety of their home and caregivers, unwilling or unable to return. If not found within 24 hours statistics indicate that they have only a 56% chance of survival.

Sixty percent of those with Alzheimer’s disease attempt to leave home (elope) at least once during the course of their dis... more

PR Miller is an Ohio-area industrial artist devoted to the concept of "waste not." His passion for recycling and the environment inspire him to create extraordinary works for art from what others might consider trash. It could be said that his affinity for scrap metal comes naturally, having been raised in a Pennsylvania junk yard. Miller's artwork has a message and he is on a mission - to save the world. Welcome, PR.

 Full Bio:

PR Miller was born and raised in Mars, Pennsylvania on a salvage yard not far from Butler County’s Callery Chemical Company. He recalls the multi-colored burning off of waste from the company that took place every Friday evening – an event the locals took in with fireworks-like awe.

The Mission
Think:Kids aims to dramatically improve society’s understanding and treatment of challenging kids. Think:Kids achieves these goals by disseminating and implementing an innovative, proven approach called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). The CPS model conceptualizes challenging behavior as the result of difficulty with crucial thinking skills; thus, unlike traditional models of discipline, the model eschews power, control, and motivational procedures and focuses instead on identifying and teaching challenging kids the skills they lack.
The Problem
There are over 12 million kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in North America alone – many still being treated in ways that are inhumane and ineffective. A heartbreaking number of kids are losing their futures simply because their challenges are poorly understood.
The Solution
At Think:Kids we hav... more

2007-05-26 -  Article - Vampire Meetings and How to Slay Them by Peg Kelly

By Peg Kelley, Facilitation Plus, www.meetingswithmuscle.com.

Meetings can be like mythical vampires – sucking the life out of intelligent and creative people. And sucking the funds out of businesses. Unfortunately, there are too many of these meetings in business today.

A UCLA study said the “typical” meeting includes nine people. If you have nine people in a meeting room for one hour, you have consumed one entire workday – plus some.

What about the dollars associated with this? Say the average salary of meetin... more
